TLC Teddies for Loving Care

February 4, 2014 By JT Leave a Comment

First Donation to Nominated Charity

The new TLC Teddy Bear appeal by Grand Lodge of Ireland received its first donation of £250.00 from Sir George Clark Masonic Lodge 669.
The donation was announced at the Installation meeting in January 2014 of our W. Master W. Bro. Keith Johnston.

The W. Master said: “Our first, but certainly not our last donation to this wonderful charity which through the Teddy Bears, brings comfort and pleasure to sick and distressed children”

The Origins of the Appeal and the Compulsive Idea

The TLC Appeal originated after an allergic reaction suddenly caused the swelling and blocking of the windpipe of the wife of a Freemason. Her life was saved by the rapid action of the medical staff at an A&E unit, who were able to resuscitate and stabilise her. They are both eternally grateful for the swift and caring attention that she received, but found the experience the most frightening of their lives and speculated on the distress that children must face when visiting A&E units.

The idea of doing something useful for medical staff at A&E units was discussed with other local Freemasons, and from that point the compulsive idea of “Teddies for Loving Care” was born. The Appeal was launched in Essex in 2001 and has since been adopted by most of the Masonic provinces across the country. Prior to the launch, a great deal of research was carried out. Hospitals were asked how many teddies would be needed. We had to establish what style and size of teddy would be suitable in order to meet stringent toy safety regulations and be ‘cuddly’ enough to appeal to small children. We needed to find a distributor that could source and deliver the teddies for us at reasonable cost. By canvassing local Masonic lodges and explaining the concept, we gained confidence that support for the Appeal would be there. Thankfully, after 12 years, that support and enthusiasm for the Appeal still exists and well over 1,000,000 teddies have now been distributed nationwide. Most of the money raised to fund the Appeal comes from Freemasons themselves through lodge donations, but we also receive some donations from grateful individuals and the sale of TLC merchandise e.g. other teddies (not the ones supplied to hospitals) and lapel pins.

[author] [author_image timthumb=’on’]https://lodge669ic.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/image085.jpg[/author_image] [author_info]There was a good attendance from the members of the lodge and visitors, with a number of brethren unable to attend who passed on their well wishes and congratulations. We had a very enjoyable meeting, followed by an excellent installed master degree, ably performed by W Bro Tarr who installed his successor with skill. The festive board was very well attended with an excellent meal, good wine, and port. The brethren were in good spirits and relaxed. The speeches and toasts were delivered in an informed and professional manner, with a mix of humour and sincerity. The brethren were entertained in song and music by W Bro’s David Beggs & William Cardwell on the pipes and in guitar and song by W bro Rennie McGrath and Bro Paul Francey, and was enjoyed by all. Keith. [/author_info] [/author]

WHAT IS FREEMASONRY?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. Its roots lie in the traditions and ceremonies of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles. Some rituals are still celebrated today.

VALUES

Freemasonry has always been about making good men better. Individuals aim to shape their lives around five core principles.

Integrity: We say what we mean, and we keep our promises.

Kindness: Although our families come first, we believe in playing a key role in our communities and give time and money to charitable ventures.

Honesty: We pride ourselves on openness, about what being a Freemason means for us.

Fairness: We treat everyone as equal – we listen to others, explore any differences and look for common ground.

Tolerance: We respect the opinions of others and behave with understanding towards them.

IS FREEMASONRY FOR ME?

Freemasonry means different things to every individual, making many new friends, contributing to society, celebrating a long tradition, experiencing personal growth, having fun.

Our logo

Welcome to Masonic Lodge No. 669, Belfast,Northern Ireland.

Our Lodge meets on the 4th Saturday every month except June, July and
August, at 6:30 pm in the Leighton room of Freemasons' Hall, Arthur Square, Belfast, Northern Ireland

Becoming a Freemason

Many people assume that to become a Freemason, a man must be invited to join. This is not so, in fact, while members might encourage their friends to join, they do not typically recruit or invite candidates for membership.

If you are interested in joining us, we encourage you to simply ask any Freemason. If you don’t know a member and wish to join, please email us via our Secretary HERE with your name, and contact details.
After each Lodge 669 meeting, we have an informal meal which applicants can also attend to meet the Lodge members, and enjoy some excellent food and good company.
We look forward to meeting you.

“There are no strangers in Freemasonry, only friends you’ve yet to meet.” George Washington
